Why Is Everyone Using Azelaic Acid? And Where Does it Fit in your AM routine?

If you’ve been hearing more about azelaic acid lately, there’s a reason it catches people’s attention. It speaks to several concerns that often appear together: uneven tone, visible redness, blemishes, and the marks blemishes leave behind.

That combination may sound familiar if your skin has changed. It’s possible to have dry, sensitive skin and still deal with breakouts. You may want a brighter, more even-looking complexion, but find that an increasingly complicated routine leaves your skin feeling tight or uncomfortable.

So where does azelaic acid fit in your skincare routine? And if you already use vitamin C in your morning routine, do you need to choose between them?

Is azelaic acid an exfoliating acid? The name can be confusing. Azelaic acid is chemically a dicarboxylic acid, but it isn’t an exfoliating AHA or BHA like glycolic or salicylic acid. You don’t need to think of it as a peel or a step that removes dead skin.

In skincare, azelaic acid is valued for how it helps address blemishes, visible redness, and uneven pigmentation. That makes it especially interesting when several of those concerns show up at once.

It can still cause tingling or dryness, particularly when you first introduce it. As with any active, the finished formula and your skin’s tolerance matter more than the ingredient name alone.

Why azelaic acid interests us for dry, sensitive, aging skin. Dry, sensitive skin can still develop blemishes, visible redness, and uneven pigmentation. These concerns can become especially frustrating when the products intended to address them leave skin feeling even drier.

Azelaic acid is interesting because it has been studied in dermatology for acne, rosacea, and hyperpigmentation. Its appeal is that it addresses more than one concern.

What percentage gives benefits without irritation?

There isn’t one guaranteed number. Most clinical evidence comes from 15% and 20% treatments, while lower concentrations have a smaller and more varied evidence base. A lower percentage may feel more comfortable for some people, but it does not guarantee a reaction-free experience—or the same results as a prescription treatment. The full formula, how often you apply it, and your skin’s condition matter too.

Where azelaic acid fits in your routine when you use tretinoin at night

Azelaic acid is not inherently a morning-only ingredient. It can be used in the morning or evening; some prescription products are directed for use at both times. Morning can be a practical place for it if tretinoin already occupies your evening routine. Keeping them at different times lets you build a simpler schedule and observe how your skin responds to each product. It does not guarantee that the combination will be irritation-free, particularly if your skin is very dry or reactive.

If you already use a vitamin C serum in the morning, you can generally apply azelaic acid afterward. Let the first product absorb before layering the next; it does not need to dry completely. Introduce the combination gradually if your skin is sensitive, and finish with sunscreen.

Where vitamin C comes in

Vitamin C plays a distinct role in a morning routine. It helps defend against free radicals generated by pollution and other environmental stressors while improving the appearance of uneven tone. But vitamin C formulas vary widely in texture and feel. ROWANE™ brings three forms of vitamin C into a rich emulsion designed to leave dry, sensitive skin feeling comfortable and supported throughout the day.

We formulated ROWANE™ as a rich, barrier-first emulsion that brings together both 8% azelaic acid, niacinamide, and 8.88% of three forms of vitamin C (tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid, and ascorbyl glucoside) to address uneven-looking tone through complementary approaches. Alongside ferulic acid, tocotrienols, Kakadu plum (exceptionally rich in vitamin C), and a botanical brightening complex featuring Humulus lupulus (hops). Ceramides, cholesterol, and panthenol help support the skin barrier, giving this rich morning emulsion the comfort dry, sensitive skin needs.

  • Azelaic acid can affect processes involved in pigment production and inflammation.

  • Niacinamide has evidence for reducing the transfer of pigment-containing melanosomes to surrounding skin cells.

  • Vitamin C provides antioxidant activity and has been studied for its effects on pigmentation.

The idea is simple: your morning treatment can address the look of uneven tone without asking you to assemble a stack of separate brightening products.

ROWANE™ was purposefully designed as an AM treatment: vitamin C and azelaic acid sit together in one morning emulsion, leaving your evening routine available for treatments such as tretinoin and for the richer care your skin may need afterward. It was specifically designed for dry, sensitive, and aging skin, to support a more even-looking, luminous complexion in a formula that also prioritizes comfort.

Keep tretinoin in your evening routine as directed by your prescriber. If you are introducing ROWANE™ while using tretinoin, start gradually and ease back if you notice persistent stinging, peeling, or tightness.

Do you need a separate azelaic acid product?

Possibly, if you’re treating a specific skin condition and your dermatologist has recommended one. Prescription and higher-strength azelaic acid treatments have their own uses.

For a daily cosmetic routine, though, more products aren’t automatically better. If your goal is to care for skin that looks dull or uneven and feels dry, you may prefer one thoughtfully formulated morning treatment over several layers of actives.

That is the role we designed ROWANE™ to play.

A morning routine that makes sense

  1. Rinse with water or cleanse gently with PASTÈSE™, our cleansing pâte

  2. Follow with ROWANE™

  3. Add moisturizer if your skin needs more richness. Let how your skin feels guide this step. We recommend BUFFÈRE™ our barrier booster with 7% ectoin

  4. Finish with a non-nano zinc SPF 50 sunscreen

If your skin is reactive, introduce any new product gradually and pay attention to how it feels. A routine should work with your skin’s tolerance, not ask you to push through discomfort.

Azelaic acid is getting attention because many people are dealing with more than one skin concern at once. We created ROWANE™ with that reality in mind: a rich morning vitamin C emulsion designed to promote visible brightness and a more even-looking tone, provide antioxidant protection against free radicals generated by pollution and other environmental stressors, and support the skin barrier along the way.
