A rich cream can soften skin and help reduce moisture loss, yet your skin may still feel dry if its outer layer lacks water. Oils and butters provide emollience, but richness alone doesn’t tell you how well a formula hydrates.
Skin needs both water-binding ingredients AND barrier support. Humectants such as glycerin help attract and retain water, while barrier lipids such as ceramides and cholesterol help replenish the skin’s protective barrier. Shea butter and plant waxes help form a protective layer that reduces moisture loss.
That’s why a cream can feel nourishing on the surface while tightness persists underneath: lasting comfort depends on the balance of hydration and moisture retention.
Persistent tightness doesn’t necessarily mean the cream is poorly balanced. The formula may not provide enough hydration for that person’s needs, or their skin may be losing moisture because its barrier is compromised. Applying a hydrating serum or lotion underneath can help, though a well-formulated cream may provide both steps.

Why we use a Quad Hydration Complex
Rather than relying on one featured hydrator, a formula can combine complementary humectants into a coordinated hydration system. For example, Hyaluronic acid is one approach to hydration, but it isn’t essential to every formula.
Different humectants bring different properties to a formula: how they bind water, how they feel on application, and how they contribute to skin conditioning. Combining them gives a formulator more ways to support hydration while balancing texture and comfort. It does not automatically make a product better. The concentrations, supporting ingredients, and finished formula still determine how it performs.
We choose complementary humectants—glycerin, sodium PCA, panthenol and saccharide isomerate—alongside barrier-supporting lipids to help skin attract, retain and conserve moisture. For those who prefer skincare without hyaluronic acid, this offers another approach to hydration. Within our formulations, we use a combination of four principal humectants:
Glycerin is a humectant that attracts and holds water in the skin’s outer layer. This helps keep skin cells hydrated and flexible, reducing the tight, rough feeling associated with dryness. It complements the formula’s barrier lipids: glycerin helps retain water, while lipids help limit its escape.
Panthenol, also known as provitamin B5, helps attract and retain moisture while supporting the skin barrier. In a controlled human study, a formulation containing 5% dexpanthenol—the D-form of panthenol—helped preserve skin hydration during repeated exposure to an irritating cleanser ingredient, compared with placebo.
Sodium PCA is an amino acid-derived humectant that complements the skin’s natural moisturizing factor—the collection of water-binding substances that keeps its outer layer hydrated. It helps attract and retain moisture, supporting softer, more supple skin alongside the formula’s other humectants and barrier lipids.
Saccharide isomerate, marketed as PENTAVITIN®, is a sugar-derived humectant that binds to the skin to support lasting moisture retention. Its supplier reports hydration lasting up to 72 hours under tested conditions and a significant hydration boost with 3% PENTAVITIN®, complementing the formula’s moisture-retention system.
For example, LAMELLARE™ features our 17.96% Quad Hydration Complex, while BUFFÈRE™ contains a 23.14% Five-Humectant Hydration Complex, which includes Ectoin to help skin retain moisture, support the skin barrier, and protect against environmental stress and soothe dry, irritated skin.
Keeping moisture from escaping
Humectants are one part of the system. The skin also needs support to retain the water they help hold. That is why we pair our humectant complex with ceramides, cholesterol, phytosphingosine, and rich emollients such as shea butter, borage oil, and rice bran oil. These ingredients have complementary roles:
Humectants bind water.
Emollients soften and smooth.
Barrier-supportive lipids and ingredients that limit evaporation help reduce moisture loss.
For very dry skin, this combination can be more useful than judging a moisturizer by thickness alone.
The Steinder Weisen® Super Hydration Skin Diet Protocol (DIÈTE DE PEAU™)
Each of our Bioactive Concentrates™ is designed as a complete, balanced formula, pairing targeted actives with hydration and barrier-supporting ingredients suited to its role. However, very dry skin may need more support than one formula can provide. Persistent tightness can reflect greater hydration needs or increased moisture loss through a compromised barrier. For this reason, we recommend a complementary protocol for very dry skin: BUFFÈRE™ to replenish hydration, LAMELLARE™ to provide structural lipids, and BASTINA™ to help seal in moisture overnight.
Our Skin Diet Protocol incorporates five complementary formulas designed to cleanse gently, replenish hydration, support the skin barrier and seal in moisture, for dry, dehydrated and sensitive skin.
PASTÈSE™ — Cleanse & Prep: Prepare skin and remove spf, makeup, and impurities. Also optimized for beard shaving. The enzymes in PASTÈSE™—papain and bromelain—help loosen protein bonds holding dead surface cells together, helping remove buildup that contributes to rough texture without abrasive scrubbing.
BUFFÈRE™ — Hydrate: Replenish hydration with our Universal Barrière Booster containing our Quad Hydration Complex help retain water. Plus, Ectoin supports hydration and protection against environmental stress, while phospholipids, ceramides and cholesterol support the barrier.
LAMELLARE™ — Replenish: Support the skin barrier with our Structural Lipid Crème, combining replenishing lipids with copper peptides that help support signaling involved in skin renewal and collagen production.
BASTINA™ — Seal: Finish your evening routine with our Overnight Lipid Sealant to help reduce moisture loss.
LISSE™ — Controlled Exfoliation: For skin that tolerates exfoliation, introduce LISSE™ on selected evenings to help remove surface buildup and improve the appearance of rough texture. Use after cleansing, followed by BASTINA™. Begin once weekly and avoid use on irritated or actively flaring skin. Do not use on the same evening as retinoids.
