Slugging for Dry, Menopausal Skin

The Art of the Slug: Overnight Moisture Support for Dry, Menopausal Skin

There is a particular kind of dryness that returns no matter how generous you are with moisturizer. Your skin feels comfortable at bedtime, yet by morning your cheeks feel tight and fine lines look more pronounced. When this happens, it is worth considering both how you supply moisture and how you help your skin retain it. Slugging brings attention to that final part of the routine: applying an occlusive layer after moisturizing to help reduce water loss.

The name may be playful, but the principle is straightforward. At Steinder Weisen®, we approach it as a considered finishing step within The Layland Method™. BASTINA™ Overnight Lipid Sealant is our interpretation of that step, designed for skin that needs additional moisture retention after its replenishing care.

Understand what you are sealing

An occlusive forms a surface layer that slows the evaporation of water from the skin. Traditional slugging commonly uses petrolatum, while other rich formulations combine ingredients that provide varying degrees of occlusion and emollience. The purpose is to help retain moisture, rather than simply create the thickest or glossiest coating possible.

This distinction matters when choosing the products underneath. Humectants help attract water, emollients soften the skin, and an occlusive layer helps limit moisture loss. Some moisturizers combine all three functions, so an additional sealant is optional. Consider it when your usual moisturizer leaves your skin comfortable initially but does not provide enough lasting support.

Why the final layer may matter during menopause

During menopause, skin can lose some of its ability to hold water, making dryness more noticeable. A familiar lightweight routine may no longer feel sufficient, particularly during cooler weather or periods spent in heated indoor environments. Richer moisturizing care may help meet those changing needs, with an additional sealing layer considered according to tolerance.

Slugging does not address the hormonal changes themselves, and it is not a necessary step for everyone experiencing menopause. Its usefulness depends on your skin’s condition, your existing moisturizer, and how you respond to a richer finish. Begin with the areas that need additional support rather than assuming your entire face requires another layer.

BASTINA™: the Steinder Weisen finishing step

BASTINA™ Overnight Lipid Sealant brings together shea and cocoa butters, meadowfoam and radish oils, lecithin, and cholesterol in a rich formula designed to help limit overnight moisture loss. Its Desert Botanical Complex includes sand verbena, agave, Joshua tree, prickly pear, ocotillo, and creosote bush. Within The Layland Method™, its role is to finish the evening routine after the moisture support your skin needs.

BASTINA is a distinct formulation, so it should not be assumed to provide the same degree of occlusion as a petrolatum ointment. Its combination of lipids and botanical ingredients offers a particular texture and formulation approach. As with any rich product, suitability depends on individual tolerance, especially when skin is sensitive or prone to reactions.

Begin with replenishment

Start with gentle cleansing that leaves your skin comfortable, then apply a tolerated moisturizer. BUFFÈRE™ Universal Barrière Booster offers hydration and barrier support through ectoin, glycerin, sodium PCA, saccharide isomerate, panthenol, and ceramides. It provides a moisturizing option formulated without hyaluronic acid or niacinamide for those who prefer to avoid these ingredients.

LAMELLARE™ Structural Lipid Crème brings humectants and emollients together with ceramides NP, AP, and EOP, cholesterol, and phytosphingosine. Choose BUFFÈRE, LAMELLARE, or another moisturizer according to what your skin tolerates and needs. You do not have to use both before BASTINA, and a sufficiently rich moisturizer may make an additional sealant unnecessary.

Apply a thin, considered layer

Once your moisturizer is in place, apply a small amount of BASTINA as the final evening step, following its product directions. Spread or press it gently without prolonged rubbing, using enough to provide a light finishing layer. More product is not automatically more useful, particularly if a heavy application feels uncomfortable.

A targeted approach can be helpful when dryness is uneven. You might apply the sealant to dry cheeks while leaving areas that already feel adequately moisturized without another layer. Introduce it on a limited area first and assess how your skin feels the next morning and over subsequent uses.

Choose a replenishing evening first

When trying slugging, begin on an evening devoted to gentle cleansing and moisturizing. Occlusion can alter how underlying products affect the skin, making a heavy sealing layer over potentially irritating actives a less conservative starting point. Cleveland Clinic advises avoiding exfoliating acids and retinoids beneath a slugging layer because of the potential for increased irritation.

Within The Layland Method™, reserve your initial BASTINA trials for replenishing evenings rather than applying a thick layer over LISSE™ or RÉAU™. This makes it easier to assess the sealant separately from your treatment products. If you use prescribed skincare, follow your clinician’s advice about layering and occlusion.

Let your skin decide whether to continue

A richer final layer may be useful for some dry skin, but it can feel excessive or contribute to breakouts for others. Acne-prone skin deserves particular care when trying an occlusive routine, and oily skin can still need moisturization without needing an additional sealant. Begin selectively and discontinue the new product if you notice irritation or worsening congestion.

Active eczema, infected skin, persistent redness, or significant itching requires appropriate clinical guidance. A botanical sealant is not automatically suitable simply because your skin is dry, and cosmetic moisturizing care does not replace treatment for a skin condition. The most useful routine is one that improves comfort without introducing a new problem.

Make the final step purposeful

The art of the slug lies in understanding what the final layer contributes. Supply moisture first, choose a sealant your skin tolerates, and use it where additional retention is helpful. A comfortable morning is a more useful goal than an elaborate bedtime routine or a highly reflective finish. For Steinder Weisen, BASTINA completes a particular role within barrier-first care. Hydrate, replenish, and seal according to need, while keeping selected treatments on their own considered schedule.
