As hormones naturally shift with age, skin can experience changes in collagen, elasticity, hydration, and lipid composition, making dryness and visible signs of aging more pronounced. We formulate to support the skin functions affected by these changes, not just the visible signs they leave behind.
🟨 Dehydration
The stratum corneum typically contains approximately 15–20% water. When water content falls significantly, skin can become dry, rough, tight, and less flexible.
Aging and hormonal change can make moisture harder to retain. Natural moisturizing factors, sebum, and barrier lipids such as ceramides can decline or change, reducing the skin’s ability to hold water. This is one reason moisturizer may feel sufficient at first—yet skin feels dry again only hours later.
🟦 Barrier Breakdown
Ceramides make up approximately 50% of stratum corneum lipids by weight, alongside cholesterol and free fatty acids. Together, these lipids form the matrix that helps keep water in and irritants out.
This barrier can become less efficient as skin ages and hormones change. Changes in epidermal lipid production and composition can weaken the organization of the stratum corneum, making it harder for skin to retain moisture and recover from external stressors.When this lipid matrix is disrupted, transepidermal water loss (TEWL) can increase, contributing to dryness, tightness, sensitivity, and reduced resilience.
This is why aging skin may need more than hydration alone: replenishing barrier-supporting lipids such as ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids helps support the structure responsible for keeping moisture in.
🟥 Oxidative Stress
UV exposure is a major contributor to visible skin aging, with one study estimating that it may account for up to 80% of visible facial aging.
The important part is that UV damage accumulates over time. Years of repeated sun exposure create cumulative oxidative stress in the skin—even when individual exposures don’t result in a visible sunburn.
UV-generated reactive oxygen species can contribute to collagen breakdown, inflammation, pigmentation changes, and damage to cellular structures. As decades of exposure compound, these changes become increasingly visible as fine lines, uneven tone, rougher texture, loss of firmness, and reduced elasticity.
This is why some signs of aging become more noticeable in midlife: what you see today can reflect years of accumulated UV exposure, not simply your current age.
🟩 Microbiome Imbalance
Human skin hosts a diverse ecosystem of microorganisms, with studies identifying more than 1,000 bacterial species across different areas of the skin.
This ecosystem is closely connected to the skin barrier. The microbiome interacts with skin cells and the immune system and plays a role in maintaining the skin’s protective environment and defending against potentially harmful microorganisms.
As skin ages—and as its lipids, hydration, sebum production, and pH change—the environment in which these microorganisms live can change as well. Research suggests the composition and diversity of the skin microbiome can shift with age.
This is another reason barrier care matters for aging skin: supporting a healthy skin environment means thinking beyond hydration alone to the barrier and the ecosystem that lives alongside it.
🟫 Structural Decline
Collagen is one of the primary proteins responsible for the skin’s strength, firmness, and structural support. Its production gradually declines throughout adulthood, at an estimated rate of approximately 1% per year.
For women, hormonal change can accelerate this structural decline. As estrogen falls around menopause, collagen synthesis decreases and collagen breakdown can increase. Studies estimate that skin may lose approximately 30% of its collagen during the first five years after menopause.
As the skin’s underlying structural network becomes less robust, the effects can become visible as thinner skin, reduced firmness and elasticity, fine lines, and changes in facial contours.
In other words, aging skin isn’t simply becoming drier on the surface. Its underlying support structure is changing too.
